Peas and carrot, peanut butter and jelly (okay, maybe peanut butter and chocolate?), fish and chips, cheese and crackers, me and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s – all of them are classic, undeniable pairings and they just belong together. But one dynamic duo missing from this little list is one that has played a crucial role in my life (and, really, all of our lives – amirite?). I’m speaking, of course, of the perfect pairing of a captivating book and an amazing cup of tea!
Truly, there is no better “me time” moment when you realize just how well your tea pairs with your book – you snuggle into your big comfy chair just a little deeper, the rest of the world sinks a little further away, and you smile just a little wider. It really is a blissful feeling. We and our friends at Archetype Books want to help you get there, so we’ve put together a few lovely pairs for you to try!
Little Paris Bookshop & Midnight Carnival
The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George – A bestseller in Germany and since translated into over 25 languages, this is an enchanting fable about a lost soul, his bookshop on a barge on the Seine and the loyal customers he advises, and the eventual trip he takes along the waterways of Provence to revisit a past love.
This lovely novel pairs very well with our new blend, Midnight Carousel. It’s a warm, toasty, comforting blend with something seemingly familiar about it – even if you’ve never had it before! Just what a lost soul needs on their journey in search of a long lost love.
And Then There Were None & Life is a Mystery
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie – Ten strangers are lured to a weekend house party on a remote island off the British coast, unaware of any connection to each other, unable to locate their host, and forced to stand by helplessly as each is killed off one by one – a riveting novel of secrets and suspense.
What else would pair as well with And Then There Were None other than our Life is a Mystery blend?! This amazing tea blend has a lot of ingredients and flavours that you wouldn’t necessarily think would go well together, but fireworks can happen when unlikely characters come together – just like in the book…..? ;)
Circling the Sun & Queen of Clubs
Circling the Sun by Paula McLain – From the author of “The Paris Wife,” another riveting fictional portrait of a woman ahead of her time: aviatrix and horsewoman Beryl Markham, the other tangent in the famous love triangle between Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen of “Out of Africa.”
A courageous woman, the urge to fly, a love triangle and a series of disastrous relationships – what would be better than a warm cup of our Queen of Clubs? Each of our teas has its own character, much like that of characters in books, and when we created the Queen of Clubs blend, we did so with the backstory of her in a torrid and secret love affair with the King of Hearts. A love triangle steeped in romance and passion.
Shadow of the Wind & Wonderland
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon – Criss-crossing genres from suspense and gothic horror to romance and magic realism, this is the story of a young man in 1940s Barcelona who possesses possibly the last copy of a book being mysteriously destroyed, and his mission to save it.
This book has a liiiiiiittle bit of everything in it, genre-wise, and all are enjoyed while intermingling with each other. Why not enjoy it with a tea that has a bit of the same? Our Wonderland signature blend is a mix of all types of tea – black, green, rooibos, oolong – and each of them work so well together to create a little cup of Wonderland. Steep, sit back, and enjoy!
Bridget Jones's Diary & The Looking Glass
Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding – With its unique and hilarious send-up of a young singleton woman’s attempts to navigate love, weight loss and work in 1990s London, this is the chick-lit classic that arguably started it all.
This novel, and the trilogy in general, all have the similar overarching theme of self-reflection in a world where we are too hard, and at times too high, on ourselves. But Bridget Jones navigates life with a little bumbling, a lot of learning, and some flare. Our pair for this character and her written life is our signature blend, The Looking Glass. This pretty, bubbly blend would be just her style – complete with peony petals to match!
